Seismic Observatory: Earthquake of 5.4 magnitude strikes northern Syria

August 12, 2024 - The Seismic Observatory at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources recorded an #earthquake in northern Syria, Hama region, east of the Dead Sea fault, with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale at 11:55 pm at a depth of 10 km.

The director of the Jordanian Seismic Observatory, Ghassan Sweidan, confirmed that the location of the earthquake is 350 km away from the capital, Amman, and it is one of the tremors that were felt by residents of the northern region and some areas of the capital, Amman. Sweidan indicated that an aftershock earthquake was recorded at exactly 12:30 am Amman time, northern Syria with a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale at a depth of 10 km.

Sweidan indicated that the impact of the earthquake on Jordan is very slight.
