October 26, 2024 - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, represented by the Jordanian Seismic Observatory, participated in a workshop on (National Data Centers and Technologies Used to Monitor Nuclear Explosions) held in the People's Republic of China during the period from October 21-25, organized by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of more than 60 countries and 100 experts.
The workshop discusses the capabilities and competencies of National Data Centers at participating countries (NDC) in using seismic information, water waves, sound, and radiation in civil fields.
The workshop was attended by the head of the Jordanian seismic observatory, Eng. Ghassan Sweidan, and geologist Murad Al-Humaimat.
During the workshop, Suwaidan spoke about the Jordanian Seismic Observatory and the National Information Center affiliated with the Observatory and its connection to the Global Data Center affiliated with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, reviewing the future cooperation plan with the organization, which includes providing the observatory with modern devices to develop business in the National Information Center and hosting a mobile ultrasonic monitoring station for 3 years.
Suwaidan discussed Jordan's role in hosting several activities and workshops and implementing the comprehensive exercise in 2014 by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization, explaining Jordan's role in preserving world peace and adhering to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which was signed and ratified in 1996.
For his part, Al-Humaimat reviewed how to use global seismic information and seismic data from seismic stations affiliated with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty systems with information recorded in Jordanian seismic stations to analyze earthquakes and apply ground standards to increase the accuracy of determining the locations of local and distant earthquakes and applying these standards to determine the locations of explosions in the event of their occurrence with an accuracy of up to 95%.
During the workshop, seismic data from the organization’s seismic monitoring station in Jordan, which is part of the Jordanian National Seismic Monitoring Network, were shared. The station provides the organization with seismic information directly after replacing the old seismic monitoring device at the organization’s Tel Al-Asfar station.
