Energy organizes a visit to the solar energy project in southern Amman

Amman, May 11, 2024 - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, through the Directorate of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, organized a scientific visit to the site of the solar energy project located in the Umm Qasir area, south of the capital, Amman, as part of the Excellence Month activities implemented by the Ministry throughout the current month of May. The engineers of the Samra Electricity Generation Company, the government company operating the project and responsible for its maintenance, spoke about the electricity generation projects that the company owns, both traditional and renewable. They presented an explanation to the Ministry’s employees about the size of the project funded by the German Development Bank, with a capacity of 46 megawatts, and a review of the technology used in thin film solar cells. For his part, the Director of the Directorate of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the Ministry, Engineer Yaqoub Marrar, presented an overview of the importance of the project and the donors’ directions to support solar energy in Jordan, pointing to the amount of interest from investors in the renewable energy sector in Jordan in general and solar energy in particular. The visit included a field tour to view solar cells and learn about their features in the project that was established under an agreement between Jordanian and German, with the aim of providing the targeted institutions, including hospitals and health centers, with clean and sustainable electricity to mitigate the effects of increased demand for energy and increased costs on institutions as a result of the influx of refugees. Ministry employees participating in the visit distributed 300 energy-saving LED lighting units to residents of the local community in the project area. The solar energy project in Umm Quseir is distinguished by its goal of saving electricity costs on the national institutions that benefit from it, which is reflected in improving their services due to saving revenues as a result of providing them with electricity produced from the project, in addition to improving the living conditions of the host communities by improving the health services provided and improving conditions. The livelihood of Syrian refugees as a result of supplying electricity to the Azraq and Zaatari refugee camps, and protecting the environment and the global climate through pollution-free electrical production.
