11 December 2025 – Under the patronage of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and Al-Shams Specialized Company signed, on Thursday, an agreement for the construction and supply, as well as a wheeling (transmission) connection agreement, for a solar power generation project with a capacity of 100 MW.
The agreements were signed by the Director General of the National Electric Power Company, Dr. Sufian Al-Batayneh, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Shams Specialized Company, Eng. Abdullah Al-Shawabkeh.
During the signing ceremony, Al-Kharabsheh emphasized the importance of the energy sector as a key driver of economic development in the Kingdom by supporting various sectors and achieving the growth rates outlined in the Economic Modernization Vision. He highlighted the Ministry’s role in reducing the burden on the industrial sector and its initiatives to support it, including extending natural gas to cities and industrial clusters across various governorates, licensing companies to transport gas to areas remote from industrial zones, launching tenders to supply natural gas to industrial cities, and providing opportunities to benefit from the implementation of time-of-use electricity tariffs.
For his part, Al-Shawabkeh affirmed the company’s intention to commence the project in January of the coming year, given its importance in reducing energy costs and enhancing the global competitiveness of locally manufactured products.
In the same context, Al-Batayneh noted that signing the two agreements constitutes one of the initiatives supporting the programs of the Economic Modernization Vision, which aim to reduce energy costs for factories by supporting energy efficiency in small and medium-sized industrial facilities, reducing electricity and fuel bills, and increasing the contribution of renewable energy to lower costs and enhance the Kingdom’s economic independence. This also includes supporting renewable energy by increasing its share in Jordan’s electricity mix in line with the national energy sector strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels and lower long-term costs for factories and other sectors.
Under the agreements, the National Electric Power Company will construct a 400 kV switchyard, a 400 kV transmission line, and carry out electrical and civil works to expand the IPP3 400 kV switchyard, with the aim of connecting the 100 MW solar power plant to the Jordanian electricity grid. Al-Shams Specialized Company, which was established under the umbrella of the Amman Chamber of Industry, will contract the construction of the plant and supply a number of factories affiliated with the Amman Chamber of Industry with electricity generated from the solar power station.
It is expected that the industrial sector will experience the direct and positive impact of the project within two years, benefiting manufacturers and investors and ultimately consumers, by enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian industries through reduced operating costs and increased efficiency. This aligns with the directions of the Economic Modernization Vision led by His Majesty the King, within the broader paths of comprehensive reform, focusing on accelerated growth, improving citizens’ quality of life, enhancing competitiveness and sustainability, with the aim of achieving comprehensive development and integrating the Jordanian economy into the global economy.
