September 7, 2026 — The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF), affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, on Monday launched a project to install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at buildings belonging to 18 municipalities in Jordan’s Southern Region, following the completion of the phase targeting municipalities in the Northern Region.

The Southern Region project is part of a comprehensive national program being implemented by the Fund across municipalities in the Kingdom. The program aims to increase reliance on renewable energy sources and targets 104 municipalities across Jordan through the installation of solar PV systems at 188 municipal buildings, with a combined capacity of up to 3.4 megawatts.

The project is expected to generate direct savings on electricity bills estimated at approximately JD 550,000 annually, while reducing carbon emissions by around 3,838 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The program also includes a capacity-building component to train and qualify municipal personnel, with more than 550 trainees set to participate in two training packages. The initiative aims to ensure the sustainability of the systems and improve their management, operation and maintenance.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. Amani Al-Azzam, said the launch of the Southern Region phase reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that all regions of the Kingdom benefit from sustainable energy programs and projects.

She stressed that moving to implementation in the Southern Region following the completion of work in the Northern Region demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to providing practical solutions that help reduce the financial burden on municipalities.

Al-Azzam added that lowering energy costs would provide municipalities with greater flexibility to direct their financial resources toward improving the quality of services provided to citizens. She noted that the project represents a practical model for using renewable energy to support local development and enhance financial and environmental sustainability.

She emphasized that the partnership with the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security contributes to supporting national aspirations in the areas of energy transition and carbon-emissions reduction, while also focusing on building and qualifying the capacities of municipal personnel and enabling them to manage and operate solar energy systems in accordance with best practices and technical standards.

For his part, JREEEF Executive Director Rasmi Hamza said the Fund continues to implement field-based programs and projects targeting priority service and development sectors. He noted that the installation of solar PV systems in municipalities in the Southern Region represents an important step in the Fund’s efforts to expand renewable energy applications and promote energy efficiency in public institutions.

Hamza explained that the Fund provides municipalities with the necessary technical, financial and training support to ensure the sustainability of the systems and achieve the targeted economic and environmental impact. He added that the results achieved in the Northern Region provide important momentum for completing the project in the Southern Region efficiently.

During the launch, the Fund also presented its experience in implementing solar energy systems in municipalities in the Northern Region. The systems contributed to reducing operating costs and the financial burden associated with electricity bills, demonstrating the effectiveness of the model in supporting the sustainability of municipal operations and improving spending efficiency.
