13 July 2026 – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources conducted a specialized training course titled "Seismic Wave Arrival Time Analysis and Velocity Modeling in Seismic Monitoring Systems" as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the scientific and technical capabilities of its staff in seismic data analysis.The course aimed to develop participants' practical and scientific skills in analyzing seismic data, improve their ability to accurately identify seismic wave arrival times, and enhance the quality of data processing and interpretation. It was attended by a number of ministry employees working in the relevant technical fields.

Delivered by geologist Murad Al-Hmeimat, the course covered the fundamental concepts of earthquakes and seismic waves, their propagation mechanisms, methods for identifying the arrival times of primary (P) and secondary (S) waves, and the importance of precise arrival-time picking in improving earthquake location accuracy and developing reliable seismic velocity models.

The training also focused on best practices for analyzing seismic records, quality assurance procedures for seismic data, and approaches to interpreting complex seismic signals that require advanced technical expertise. In addition, participants explored common challenges encountered in seismic analysis and practical methods for addressing them.

The course included hands-on training using approved seismic monitoring and analysis software. Participants analyzed real seismic data recorded by monitoring stations, identified wave arrival times, and reviewed and compared their results in accordance with established technical standards.

The program concluded with practical exercises and assessments designed to evaluate participants' proficiency in seismic data analysis and the accurate determination of seismic wave arrival times, contributing to improved seismic monitoring and analysis capabilities within the Ministry.

This training course is part of a series of internal knowledge transfer workshops delivered by the Ministry's team of experts under the Tacit Knowledge Transfer Project, implemented by the Ministry's Knowledge Management and Innovation Department. The initiative aims to document specialized expertise, facilitate knowledge sharing among employees, strengthen institutional knowledge sustainability, and enhance overall organizational performance.
