Al-Azzam: Regional electrical interconnection represents a priority in enhancing energy security and achieving the optimal use of renewable energy resources
1 July 2026 - The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, opened today, Wednesday, the meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean UfM Energy Platform, held remotely, on behalf of the Jordanian joint presidency alongside the European Union, within the activities of the third Mediterranean Green Week, with the participation of member states, European institutions, and relevant partners in the energy sector.
In her speech, Al-Azzam emphasized the importance of enhancing joint work to address the challenges of the energy sector and accelerating the transition towards more sustainable and resilient energy systems to support energy security in the region, stating that regional electrical interconnection remains one of our shared priorities, due to its importance in enhancing energy security, achieving the optimal use of renewable energy resources, and supporting the energy sector transition at the regional level, and what that requires of continuing investment in regional interconnection projects and energy infrastructure.
Al-Azzam said that collective action, strong partnerships, and continued regional cooperation are essential and very important, calling on partners to continue supporting the EU initiative for renewable energy and clean technologies in the Mediterranean (T-MED).
She stressed the importance of the availability of reliable and consistent energy data and statistics, pointing out that good data is a foundation for better planning, more efficient policy-making, measuring progress, and making informed decisions that support the path of energy sector transition.
Al-Azzam commended the valuable efforts made by the working groups of the Union for the Mediterranean UFM Energy Platform, which contribute to advancing shared goals, looking forward to achieving more accomplishments and practical outcomes that support and enhance regional cooperation in the energy sector.
The participants discussed the EU initiative for renewable energy and clean technologies in the Mediterranean (T-MED), and the statistical cooperation program in the energy field, and reviewed the work programs of the working groups and projects funded by the European Union, in addition to following up on the implementation of the regional energy action plan, and exchanging expertise on national strategies, legislative reforms, investment needs, interconnection projects, and regional cooperation. Several countries, including Jordan, also presented their experiences.
