Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. Amani Al-Azzam, on Thursday sponsored the launch of a specialized workshop aimed at developing a comprehensive national roadmap to reduce fossil fuel use in the buildings sector. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with relevant stakeholders and within the framework of the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership, through identifying priority actions and establishing implementation plans and clear timelines that contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing energy efficiency, and achieving Jordan’s climate action goals.

In her opening remarks during the workshop, Al-Azzam emphasized that developing a roadmap for decarbonizing the buildings sector represents a pivotal step toward improving energy efficiency and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources, stressing the importance of integrated national efforts to achieve sustainability goals.

She explained that the workshop marks an important milestone within the project’s implementation process, which, in its previous phases, witnessed fruitful cooperation among various stakeholders. This included assessing the current situation, identifying key challenges, developing a problem tree, and holding specialized consultation sessions for each area of work.

Al-Azzam added that the current phase focuses on identifying implementable executive measures and practical solutions, in addition to establishing clear frameworks for distributing roles and responsibilities among the concerned parties, ensuring effective and sustainable outcomes.

She also stressed the importance of strengthening institutional integration and coordination among all partners to ensure the effective implementation of the roadmap, in line with the Kingdom’s strategic directions in the fields of energy and sustainability.

For her part, Director of the Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Directorate, Eng. Lina Mubaideen, stated that following the completion of the roadmap development phases for the buildings sector, this workshop comes to translate challenges into clear practical solutions by defining responsibilities, establishing key performance indicators, and preparing a specific implementation timeline. This, she noted, will ensure a clear distribution of roles among the various stakeholders and achieve effective and sustainable results.

The workshop included several sessions featuring opening remarks and interventions from representatives of partner entities, in addition to presentations on the project’s objectives, timeline, and different phases, as well as an overview of the workshop’s objectives and working mechanisms.

It also included specialized breakout sessions during which participants were divided into working groups focusing on several key themes, most notably strategic priorities, urban planning, new buildings, and existing buildings, with the aim of formulating practical and implementable measures that support the execution of the roadmap.

This workshop comes as part of the Ministry’s efforts to accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon economy through the development of practical policies and measures that contribute to improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions, particularly in the buildings sector, which is considered one of the most energy-intensive sectors.
