Al-Kharabsheh: Rationalizing consumption is the first step toward achieving energy security
Ghosheh: Regional conditions have pushed energy efficiency to the top of national priorities

April 12, 2026 – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in cooperation with the Jordan Engineers Association, launched the National Campaign for Energy Consumption Rationalization, in the presence of Minister of Energy Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh and JEA President Eng. Abdullah Asem Ghosheh.

Al-Kharabsheh stated during the launch event that there is an urgent need to expand and mainstream the culture of energy efficiency more than ever, noting that the first step toward achieving comprehensive energy security is adopting efficient consumption practices.

He explained that the results of energy audit and efficiency projects implemented by the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund showed savings of up to 20% in some factories and up to 50% in some hotels. He expressed hope that efficiency practices would become a standard behavior across all sectors, noting that achievements in this area remain modest so far. He added that Jordan has recorded an energy intensity indicator exceeding the global average by about 25%.

Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that energy efficiency is now essential and aligned with the Economic Modernization Vision in supporting the national economy, increasing productivity, and creating job opportunities. He called on all relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to institutionalize a culture of efficiency alongside ongoing legislative reviews.

For his part, Eng. Abdullah Asem Ghosheh stated that the surrounding regional conditions have placed energy efficiency at the forefront of engineering and national priorities. He noted that successive crises have driven a reassessment of resource management and efficiency, enhancing Jordan’s ability to adapt to changes in the energy market.

Ghosheh added that the current phase requires strengthening institutional work in the energy sector by integrating efficiency concepts across all stages of engineering work—from design and planning to energy auditing and the application of sustainability standards in buildings and facilities—ensuring improved performance, reduced losses, and tangible savings in consumption.

He also stressed the importance of continuously updating codes and regulatory frameworks to keep pace with technological advancements and international standards, affirming that energy efficiency is no longer a technical option but a national necessity linked to both energy and economic security, and a driver of sustainable development and competitiveness.

The campaign targets all categories of energy consumers (governmental, industrial, commercial, educational, and residential) through a gradual and integrated approach that balances rapid implementation with lasting impact. This includes immediate low-cost actions such as optimizing operations, reducing unnecessary loads, and enhancing demand-side management during peak hours to ease pressure on the grid and lower operational costs.

It also includes short-term operational improvements through practical programs based on simplified energy audits to identify saving opportunities and improve system efficiency, particularly in air conditioning, lighting, and operations, along with the introduction of measurement tools.

In addition, the campaign aims to establish a sustainable institutional framework to ensure long-term impact, including the development and adoption of national energy efficiency standards and the gradual implementation of sustainable solutions aligned with national priorities and socio-economic considerations.

A series of awareness messages has been designed to ensure outreach and impact, including organizing specialized seminars and workshops, distributing educational materials in universities, schools, and community events, producing short social media videos, and broadcasting concise guidance messages.

These seminars and workshops will be implemented in cooperation with public institutions, the private sector, and academic experts, strengthening the role of youth in promoting a culture of energy efficiency.
