6 January 2026 – Under the patronage of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, an agreement was signed today, Tuesday, to sell and supply natural gas produced from the Risha Gas Field to Jordan’s electricity generation system. The agreement was concluded between the National Petroleum Company (NPC), the Jordanian Oil Terminals Company (JOTC), the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Jordan LNG Company, Samra Electric Power Generation Company (SEPCO), and the National Advanced Natural Gas Company.
Dr. Al-Kharabsheh emphasized that the agreement reflects the high level of cooperation within the energy sector, aiming to expand the use of natural gas, strengthen reliance on this local energy source, and ensure sustainable financial funding for the operations of the National Petroleum Company.
The agreement—the first of its kind in Jordan—aims to regulate the process of purchasing gas from the National Petroleum Company by the Jordanian Oil Terminals Company, including gas processing and transportation services to Samra Power Plant sites through Jordan LNG Company, for utilization by the National Electric Power Company.
According to the agreement, the Jordanian Oil Terminals Company will purchase natural gas from the National Petroleum Company in line with the operational requirements of the Jordanian electricity generation system, as determined by NEPCO. The agreed quantity in the first phase is approximately 2.5 million cubic feet per day, to be gradually increased according to a clear and binding timeline agreed upon by all signatory parties, reaching 20 million cubic feet per day.
The agreement contributes to achieving the objectives of the National Energy Strategy by increasing the share of local energy sources in the overall energy mix. It also supports the marketing of gas produced by the National Petroleum Company, generating revenue that enables the company to implement its plans for drilling wells and increasing production from the Risha Gas Field. Natural gas is characterized by its lower cost compared to traditional energy sources and its greater environmental benefits.
The Council of Ministers had approved the agreement to supply natural gas produced from the Risha Gas Field to the Kingdom’s electricity generation system on 22 October of last year.
