The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, and the Chairman of the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority, Eng. Ayman Ismail, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of electrical interconnection, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and develop interconnection projects between both sides.
Minister Al-Kharabsheh affirmed that the signing of the memorandum reflects the depth of historical relations between the two sides and embodies the commitment to enhance cooperation in the energy field in a way that contributes to achieving electrical security and integration of the electricity system in the region.
Al-Kharabsheh pointed out that Jordan’s capabilities are available and dedicated to serving the Palestinian side, under the directives and support of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who places special priority on the Palestinian cause. He emphasized Jordan’s keenness to provide all forms of cooperation to enable the Palestinian brothers to achieve self-sufficiency in the energy field through Jordan.
For his part, Eng. Ismail stated that the Memorandum of Understanding represents an important step toward developing the infrastructure of the electricity sector in Palestine and improving its operational efficiency. He highlighted the importance of cooperation with the Jordanian side in implementing future joint projects.
Ismail praised the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Jordan and Palestine that extend across various fields, noting the qualitative leap achieved in the electrical interconnection project between the two sides and its tangible impact during the recent heatwave, where it contributed to meeting the essential needs of Jericho Governorate and delivering service to the outskirts of Jerusalem Governorate.
He affirmed the commitment of both sides to deliver electricity through the interconnection project to the city of Jerusalem in the future, which would enhance the independence of the Palestinian energy sector and deepen joint cooperation between the two countries.
For his part, Eng. Sufian Al-Batainah, Director General of the Jordanian National Electric Power Company, explained that the memorandum comes as a continuation of joint cooperation efforts and aims to enhance the efficiency of electrical interconnection between the two sides. He confirmed that Jordan continues to develop its networks and technical infrastructure to support the needs of the Palestinian side.
The memorandum aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of electrical interconnection and the exchange of technical expertise and information, contributing to the diversification of energy sources and enhancing the efficiency and reliability of electricity networks.
It also includes cooperation in technical and economic studies funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), prepared by the international consulting company (CESI), to determine the best technical options for establishing new electrical interconnection points.
The memorandum stipulates the formation of a joint technical and administrative committee responsible for following up on its implementation and supervising related projects, in addition to coordinating with donor entities to secure the necessary funding for future interconnection projects.
It is worth noting that the electrical interconnection project between the Jordanian National Electric Power Company and the Jerusalem District Electricity Company began in 2008 from the Suweimah station at 33 kV with a capacity ranging between 20 and 30 MW to supply Jericho and nearby areas, before the Al-Rameh station near the border was later put into operation, increasing the exported capacity to about 80 MW and supplying additional areas in the West Bank. This contributed to enhancing the reliability of electrical networks and developing technical cooperation between the two sides.
