Kharabsheh: Jordan Has Achieved a Significant Leap in Renewable Energy Over the Past Five Years

October 7, 2025 – Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, affirmed that Jordan has achieved a remarkable transformation in the renewable energy sector over the past five years, raising the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to around 27% by the end of 2024, compared to only 0.5% in 2014.

The Minister made these remarks while patronizing the regional meeting “Towards a Just Energy Future”, organized by Greenpeace MENA, the MENA Natural Resource Governance Network, and the Regional Center for Energy and Climate Justice affiliated with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The event aimed to coordinate regional efforts toward an equitable and inclusive energy transition that places climate and social justice at the heart of regional policies.

Dr. Kharabsheh highlighted that Jordan, driven by its abundant solar and wind resources, has successfully attracted investments exceeding 2.15 billion Jordanian dinars in renewable energy projects. He also emphasized the environmental challenges posed by climate change, calling for serious international cooperation to combat extreme weather phenomena.

The Minister further noted that the Ministry is currently updating the National Energy Sector Strategy for 2025–2035, with the aim of increasing the contribution of renewable energy projects and enhancing the stability of the national power grid.

Dr. Pierre Saade, Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the Natural Resource Governance Network, stated:

“The new regional roadmap provides a clear vision and policies to advance a just, inclusive, and transparent energy transition in the MENA region, setting priorities for governments to diversify economies and protect communities. We count on collective efforts to strengthen the role of local communities as key partners in shaping national, regional, and global policies for a sustainable and resilient future.”

Meanwhile, Goue Nakhte, Executive Director of Greenpeace MENA, stressed that achieving a just energy transition

“requires reimagining the role of energy in building a more sustainable and equitable future for the region.”

Representatives of participating networks underscored the importance of regional cooperation to ensure an equitable and inclusive energy transition that addresses the needs of local communities.

The launch of the Regional Roadmap for a Just Energy Transition and the “Polluter Pays” Charter marks a pivotal milestone in shaping the future of energy in the region. The initiative bridges climate action and social justice, promoting community-centered transition capable of transforming economies, creating millions of decent jobs, and expanding access to affordable energy for all.
