January 2, 2025 - The capital, Amman, witnessed today, Thursday, the signing of a renewed electric power exchange agreement between the National Electric Power Company of Jordan and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, in the presence of Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Sufyan Al-Bataineh, Director General of the National Electric Power Company, and Engineer Mona Rizq, Chairperson  of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The renewed contract extends the joint cooperation efforts in electricity interconnection between the two countries, covering the period from January 1 to December 31, 2025.

In his speech during the signing ceremony, Al-Kharabsheh emphasized the importance of the agreement in strengthening electricity reliability and developing energy infrastructure between the two brotherly nations. He noted that the cooperation between the two sides serves as a model for regional electricity interconnection projects, which have been ongoing for 25 years.

It was also highlighted that the contract reflects a mutual commitment to advancing energy systems, supporting electrical integration in the region, enhancing the stability of electricity grids, and promoting the expansion of renewable energy use.

The ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of continued coordination and joint efforts to develop interconnection projects, particularly increasing the capacity of the electricity interconnection line between the two countries. Feasibility studies for this project have already begun, aiming to contribute to sustainable development and strengthen energy security for both nations and the region.

It is worth noting that Jordan and Egypt have been exchanging electricity since 1999. The Jordanian power grid is linked to the Egyptian grid via a 400-kilovolt submarine cable that spans 13 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. This connection is part of the Eight-Country Interconnection Project, which includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkey.
