The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources held an awareness lecture entitled “Remote Sensing Technology and Its Use in the Mining Sector,” delivered by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rawashdeh. The lecture aimed to introduce modern technologies and their applications in mineral exploration and the development of the mining sector.

The lecture covered the concept of remote sensing technology and the methods used to collect and analyze data and information without direct contact with the target, through studying the electromagnetic radiation reflected or emitted by different objects and materials.

Dr. Al-Rawashdeh highlighted the key applications of remote sensing in mineral exploration and the role of spectral signatures in identifying minerals and distinguishing their characteristics. He also discussed the technology’s applications in studying vegetation and the environment, as well as analyzing the characteristics of surfaces and materials.

The lecture also addressed different types of sensors and their platforms, including ground-based sensors, aircraft, drones, and satellites, in addition to LiDAR, Photogrammetry, and Mobile Mapping Systems, and their role in producing highly accurate three-dimensional data and models.

The lecturer discussed the concepts of spatial and spectral resolution, as well as the differences between multispectral and hyperspectral technologies. He emphasized the importance of selecting the appropriate sensor and spectral range according to the nature of the target being studied, which contributes to improving the accuracy of analysis and interpretation.

The lecture emphasized the importance of utilizing satellite data, artificial intelligence, and modern technologies to develop geological and mineral analysis tools, improve exploration processes, and enhance the efficiency of utilizing Jordan’s national mineral resources.

The lecture was held as part of the Ministry’s “Guest of the Month” program, implemented by the Knowledge Management and Innovation division, as part of the Ministry’s efforts to promote knowledge and innovation, build the capacities of its staff, keep pace with technological developments in remote sensing and geospatial data, and utilize these technologies to support exploration activities and develop the mining sector in Jordan.
