December 16, 2024 – The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, stated today that Jordan's energy sector has achieved numerous milestones and continues to provide exceptional services. The sector is witnessing ongoing advancements thanks to the efforts of Jordanian citizens over the years.

Speaking at a dialogue session organized by the Jordan Engineers Association’s Energy Committee under the theme “Developments in the Energy Sector in the Kingdom,” and attended by the Ministry Secretary-General, the Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, and the Director General of the National Electric Power Company, Dr. Kharabsheh highlighted the challenges posed by global advancements in the energy sector. He assured the audience of the ministry’s commitment to overcoming these challenges.

Dr. Kharabsheh emphasized that high energy costs remain a significant challenge for other sectors, promising solutions to transform the energy sector into an economic and national driver.

Renewable Energy Leadership

He pointed out that ensuring energy security used to be a national concern. However, Jordan is now a leader in renewable energy production, contributing 27% of the country's electricity generation. Plans are underway to increase this contribution to 31% by 2031.

Gas and Oil Exploration Progress

Dr. Kharabsheh shared positive indicators related to gas exploration in the Risha area and oil drilling activities in regions such as Azraq, Jafr, West Safawi, and Sarhan. Several companies have expressed interest in investing in these exploration projects, which are progressing according to a strategic work plan. He noted, however, that exploration and drilling require time to yield results.

National Gas Delivery Program

The minister announced the launch of a national program to deliver natural gas to cities and industrial clusters, with plans to extend natural gas to Amman and Zarqa soon. He noted that using natural gas reduces energy costs for citizens and production sectors by at least 35%.

Green Hydrogen Strategy

Dr. Kharabsheh highlighted that green hydrogen is the fuel of the future. Jordan has made significant progress in this area by developing a national green hydrogen strategy, aiming to make the country a regional hub for green hydrogen production. This initiative will meet part of Jordan’s domestic needs and enable exports.

He revealed that 14 memoranda of understanding and one framework agreement have been signed to produce green hydrogen in Jordan, with two companies already signing land use agreements for conducting specific technical studies.

Electricity Law Updates

Dr. Kharabsheh explained that the General Electricity Law has been amended to include new concepts aligned with the energy transition. The draft law is published on the Legislation and Opinion Bureau’s website for public consultation.

Technological Advances

The Secretary-General of the Ministry, Eng. Amani Alazzam, emphasized that Jordan is progressing steadily in the energy sector, keeping pace with the rapid technological developments globally. She noted the preparation of a draft gas law in collaboration with companies to create a modern and effective legal framework.

Eng. Alazzam also highlighted the significant progress in renewable energy’s contribution to electricity production, which rose from 1% in 2014 to 27% today. Plans are in place to integrate renewable energy into National Electric Power Company mechanisms by 2035.

Engineers Association’s Role

The President of the Jordan Engineers Association, Eng. Ahmed Samara, welcomed the participation of the minister, secretary-general, and key officials in the session. He affirmed the association’s commitment to enhancing collaboration with the government and providing expertise to support energy security and sustainability.

Engaging Dialogue

The session concluded with a lively discussion, as participants posed questions and shared valuable feedback on Jordan's energy sector.
