June 19, 2025Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), emphasized that the energy sector represents a top national priority for Jordan, highlighting the challenges the sector has faced due to the country’s dependence on energy imports to meet its needs.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the "Refugee Energy Skills Enhancement Project", held on Thursday and organized jointly by Al Hussein Technical University, the German Jordanian University, the German Energy Academy, and the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund, Al-Azzam stated that these challenges have driven Jordan to adopt a clear vision for a more sustainable energy transition—one based on source diversification and increased reliance on renewable energy.

She noted that Jordan’s ambitious renewable energy strategies have contributed to approximately 27% of the electricity consumed in the Kingdom, with a vision to increase that share to 50% by 2033, in line with Jordan’s goal of achieving energy security.

Al-Azzam further emphasized that the energy sector transformation is not only about infrastructure development and the adoption of modern technologies, but also about investing in human capital. She praised the project as a model for human empowerment, sustainable development, and shaping the future of the energy sector.

Dr. Ismail Al-Hinti, President of Al Hussein Technical University, praised the remarkable outcomes of the refugee energy skills enhancement project, noting that the program involved 180 young men and women, half of whom are Syrian and Palestinian refugees.

Dr. Al-Hinti commended the effective partnership between Al Hussein Technical University, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the German Jordanian University, and other stakeholders involved in the project, which contributes significantly to Jordan’s energy transition efforts.

He also highlighted the role of the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund, describing it as a leading model in philanthropic education support, and noted that the project had produced a group of skilled engineers committed to building a sustainable future.

In the same context, Hamzeh Al-Banna, academic and trainer at Al Hussein Technical University, spoke about future aspirations to expand green energy initiatives, including green hydrogen and smart buildings, affirming the fund’s commitment to creating real change toward a better future.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Dr. Al-Hinti distributed certificates to a number of participating students in recognition of their successful completion of the program.
