Amman – June 17, 2025 – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh, reassured members of the Energy Sector Partnership Council that Jordan’s power system remains stable and secure, despite the suspension of natural gas supplies used for electricity generation due to the ongoing regional escalation.
During a meeting with council members to discuss the regulations and instructions stemming from the General Electricity Law No. (10) of 2025, Kharabsheh explained that regional countries have faced numerous challenges due to the rapidly escalating geopolitical tensions. In response, Jordan activated contingency plans to ensure the continuity of supply, highlighting the significant role that local energy sources have played in supporting the electricity sector.
He added that Jordan imports approximately 100 million cubic feet of gas per day from Egypt, noting that the government is incurring additional costs due to the current crisis.
Kharabsheh also clarified that the Kingdom is replenishing its supply chains of diesel and other petroleum products to support electricity generation. He emphasized that power stations are capable of switching to alternative fuels, thus maintaining the efficiency of the power grid.
He stressed that the Ministry is closely monitoring regional developments and is coordinating with all concerned parties to ensure continuous electricity supply for all citizens and sectors.
In a related context, the Minister and the Partnership Council discussed the draft regulations and instructions stemming from the new electricity law, which includes two regulations and 14 instructions. Kharabsheh explained that the new law enhances the energy storage system for consumers, contributing to greater energy supply security. He called on the Council to submit their comments and suggestions regarding the draft regulations to prepare for legal approval procedures.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Jordan Electric Power Company (JEPCO), Samra Electric Power Generation Company, Irbid District Electricity Company, Electricity Distribution Company, Central Electricity Generating Company, as well as representatives from the Jordan Strategy Forum, Jordan Chamber of Industry, National Energy Research Center, EDAMA Association for Energy, Water and Environment, the Jordan Renewable Energy Companies Association, representatives from the Jordan Engineers Association, and representatives of companies that have signed agreements with the Ministry in the field of green hydrogen.
