June 29, 2025 – The Change Team at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, led by Head of the International Cooperation Department, Nidal Al-Qassem, held an introductory session on Sunday to present the project to transform the Ministry’s headquarters into a sustainable green building. The session is part of the Ministry’s efforts to obtain the international green building certification (EDGE). The presentation was delivered by team member Eng. Fatima Nasser, in the presence of Eng. Lina Mubaideen, Director of Energy Efficiency and Climate Change, representing the Secretary-General of the Ministry; Abeer Shaalan, representing the International Finance Corporation (IFC); and Maysoun Al-Khreisat, representing the Jordan Green Building Council.
Al-Qassem emphasized that the project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Economic Modernization Vision, and the Ministry’s strategic objectives. He highlighted the importance of obtaining the EDGE certification to improve energy efficiency in the building, enhance environmental sustainability, improve the work environment for employees, and strengthen the Ministry’s image as a model for other government institutions. The project also supports national policies, generates financial savings, and raises community and environmental awareness.
Mubaideen stated that EDGE certification is a significant global requirement for government sectors and stressed the importance of expanding the culture of green buildings in Jordan. She noted that the certification goes beyond energy efficiency to include water efficiency and overall environmental sustainability.
She added that the Ministry is highly committed to training its staff on the requirements for obtaining certification and called for more specialized workshops and training courses in this field.
Shaalan, in turn, stressed the need to expand green buildings in Jordan, noting that the country’s role in this area remains limited. She explained that the IFC supports all global efforts aimed at expanding green buildings and that the EDGE certification program sets international standards to improve building efficiency, reduce costs, and lower emissions.
Al-Khreisat underscored the importance of the Ministry’s pursuit of EDGE certification, affirming that this initiative will position the Ministry as a role model for other ministries.
She noted that the Jordan Green Building Council regularly holds courses and workshops in both the public and private sectors to familiarize engineers with the certification requirements, having trained nearly 3,000 engineers over the past five years.
