February 29, 2024 - The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eng. Amani Al-Azzam, confirmed that the Ministry has taken several measures in cooperation with relevant partners in the sector to confront the challenges facing the process of expanding renewable energy generation, in order to achieve security of energy supply while fulfilling Jordan’s climate commitments.

Regarding these measures, Al-Azzam confirmed during the opening of the first national workshop of the MENALINKS program entitled “Determining the scope of national priorities within the ambitious development program for renewable energy projects and achieving integration between energy-consuming sectors in the Middle East and North Africa region MENALINKS” that they were represented by studies to strengthen the electrical network and move towards smart networks. And finding storage solutions, such as a project to store electricity using water, noting that all detailed feasibility studies for this project have been completed.

Al-Azzam completed the measures aimed at facing the challenges of expanding the supply of more renewable energy to the network by following up on the electrical connection with neighboring countries, studying the development of the existing infrastructure, and starting to implement the time-related electrical tariff system on an optional basis, as a step that contributes to reducing costs in some sectors, declaring that it The transition to applying time-related tariffs will be mandatory after the complete installation of the smart meters.

Al-Azzam pointed out the achievements made by Jordan in achieving sustainable development, as renewable energy now covers approximately 27% of the Kingdom’s consumption of electrical energy during the year 2022, and we are working to increase this percentage to reach 31% by the year 2030 according to the comprehensive strategy for the energy sector (2020). -20230).

For his part, the Principal Assistant to the President of the Royal Scientific Society for Sustainability, Eng. Walid Shaheen, confirmed that the MENALINEX project, which is implemented by the National Energy Research Center at the Royal Scientific Society in partnership with the relevant authorities in Jordan, will provide technical support, support energy sector policies, and provide training to enhance integration between renewable energies and the electrical grid. Developing smart networks and their uses by various sectors in Jordan, such as the industrial sector and the buildings sector.

This regional program, which is being implemented alongside Jordan by Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey, comes through the International Climate Initiative and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, with the aim of supporting integration between different energy sectors and encouraging the use of renewable energies to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. .

The workshop was organized by the MENALEX project in cooperation with the Royal Scientific Society through the National Center for Energy Research and in cooperation with the German consulting company Guidehouse Energy Germany (GmbH), with the aim of selecting the main topics that the program targets during its implementation period in the next 6 years (2023-2029) and in accordance with the priorities. The national strategy contained in the comprehensive strategy for the energy sector 2020-2030 prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The workshop was moderated by Engineer Sawsan Bawarsh, project manager in Jordan.
