Amman, December 21, 2024 – The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Amani Al-Azzam, participated in the National Conference on Climate Change and the Green Economy, held today, Saturday, in Amman under the theme “Jordan’s National Response to Climate, Health, and Environmental Changes.”
During the conference, Al-Azzam outlined the Ministry's key strategies and plans for transitioning to green energy, which now contributes 27% of the Kingdom's total energy mix. This reflects the Ministry's commitment to developing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources that address the challenges of climate change.
She also highlighted the upcoming electricity storage project at the Mujib Dam, the first of its kind to bolster Jordan's capacity to store renewable energy and use it effectively. The project has a capacity of 450 megawatts and storage capability for up to seven hours.
In the same context, Al-Azzam emphasized the Ministry’s work on electrical interconnection projects with Egypt, Palestine (through the Jerusalem Electricity Company), and Iraq. Additionally, she noted that agreements with Saudi Arabia are nearing completion, aiming to support renewable energy projects in Jordan.
Al-Azzam also shed light on efforts to invest in green hydrogen, positioning Jordan as a regional leader in attracting investments in this field. This sector is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable energy goals.
Regarding natural gas, Al-Azzam referred to the national program to expand the natural gas network to industrial areas and urban centers, which aims to reduce energy costs and promote the use of clean energy. Significant progress has already been made, with gas delivery to the Al-Qweirah and Al-Qastal areas and the recent inauguration of the reduction and measurement station in Al-Hashimiyya, Zarqa. She confirmed that the gas network would soon be expanded to include all industrial cities.
Concluding her remarks, Al-Azzam stressed the importance of leveraging the Arab Gas Pipeline, which extends from northern to southern Jordan, as a cornerstone for enhancing the Kingdom’s energy security.
The National Conference on Climate Change and the Green Economy comes at a time when Jordan is intensifying its efforts to transition to renewable energy and present innovative solutions to tackle climate change challenges.
